Isola Art Center “Divenire Urbano”

Interdisciplinary Philosophical Workshop

with Millepiani / 2006

The “Office for Urban Transformation” “out”, is working in the Isola district in Milan. “out” is primarily a method of working to develop a new kind of urbanism.

The instruments of this “unitarian” urbanism are not the same orthodox ones of the traditional urbanism applied by public administrations and city councils.

The office is working to understand the city, its qualities and defects, using instruments that are undervalued today: the artistic sensibilities of many professionals (architects, philosophers, photographers, designers, lawyers, musicians and others) combined with the daily urban experience and the intuition of city dwellers.

This symbiosis is possible when citizens organize themselves and start to act to express a desire for change.

Out’s dream is one of different cities, made for human beings, structured for people’s needs. Uncovering these needs of the inhabitants, making them visible and promoting them is part of the work of “out”.

“out” combines the creativity and know-how of professionals with the desires expressed and promoted by self-organized citizens.
